Breakthrough for Grenland Group rig design

(9 March 2012)
Yantai CIMC Raffles Offshore Ltd. has awarded Grenland Group the contract for detail design of the GG5000 semisubmersible drilling rig, "COSLProspector".

In April 2011, COSL Drilling Europe (CDE) selected Grenland Group's GG5000 for its 4th drilling unit. GG has since then done the basic design on contract for COSL/CDE, and has now been awarded the contract for detail design by the shipyard Yantai CIMC Raffles Offshore Ltd.

This is the first semisubmersible drilling rig being built based on GG5000 design and the first engineering contract GG signs directly with a Chinese shipyard.

GG has also been involved in CDE's three former semis of different design, COSLPioneer – currently in operation in the North Sea, COSLInnovator – just arrived to Norway to start work for Statoil, and COSLPromoter – currently under construction in China ready for delivery in 2012.

"The award is a tribute to the excellent performance by our Chinese and Norwegian offices on the previous COSL projects. We believe this project will prove GG5000 to be a state of the art design and bring GG's global execution model to the next level. COSL and Yantai CIMC Raffles are highly valued clients of ours, and we appreciate this opportunity to further strengthen our relationship with them", says Erik Taule, EVP Solutions.

"GG5000 has been developed during the extended basic design phase. The development is a result of the GG engineering team's vast experience in a well developed co-operation with CDE. Grenland Group is now one of very few companies that have succeeded in developing a semisubmersible drilling rig design for the global market that is also certified to work on the Norwegian Continental Shelf", says Tor Kvillum, Project Manager in Grenland Group.

The unit includes a DP3 system as well as a pre-laid mooring system. Variable deck load is 5000 tonnes.

COSLProspector is scheduled for delivery in 3rd quarter 2014.
